Philly grads in D1 college roundup: Grayum, Bard, Glavin, McCarthy lead Duke to rout in opener; Prince, Pickering, Gallagher, Birtwistle, Venzie have big days

Grad student transfer Luke Grayum (Shipley School) collected three goals and two assists in his Blue Devils debut as host Duke rolled to a 26-7 rout of Bellarmine today in a Division I opener.

Also for Duke, defenseman Henry Bard (Lower Merion) had two groundballs and a caused turnover; Pearse Glavin (Haverford School) had a goal, an assist, and a groundball; Ben McCarthy (Haverford School) won 6 of 11 faceoffs; and scored once; winning goalie Patrick Jameison (Conestoga) had 3 saves on four shots; and Connor Nolen (Haverford School) had one groundball.

In other games:

Mount St. Mary’s 14, Queens 9

Garret Conley (Hill School) won 9 of 18 faceoffs, Brian Bradley (Garnet Valley) had two groundballs and a caused turnover and
Seamus McCloskey (Haverford School) scooped a groundball for the Mount.

Georgetown 13, Loyola 6

Freshman Ross Prince (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) won 16 of 20 face-offs in his collegiate debut for the winning Hoyas.

Bucknell 23, Merrimack 7

Defenseman Will Pickering (La Salle) collected four groundballs, three caused turnovers, and an assist for the Bison in their opening-day win.

Navy 14, High Point 10

LSM Sean Gallagher (Garnet Valley) collected six groundballs and two caused turnovers for the winning Mids.

For High Point, Justin Wixted (Spring-Ford) had a goal, an assist, a groundball and a caused turnover while Jeb Brenfleck (Academy of the New Church) added a goal and three groundballs and his brother Zack Brenfleck (Academy of the New Church) had one groundball.

Maryland 12, Richmond 7

Eric Spanos (Malvern Prep) dished two assists and two groundballs for the winning Terps. Also, Will Schaller (Hill School) and Mitchell Lloyd (St. Joseph’s Prep) each had one groundball and one caused turnover, while Georgy Holmes (Haverford School) had a groundball.

For Richmond, Jack Pilling (La Salle) had two groundball and a caused turnover, Ethan Gyllenhaal (Springside Chestnut Hill) had two groundballs, and Joe Sheridan had one groundball.

Syracuse 24, Jacksonville 5

Jackson Birtwistle (Radnor) had two goals and Gavin Gibbs (Moravian Academy) scored once for the Orange.

Manhattan 14, Wagner 3

Sean Shelko (Lenape) had two goals and two assists and Scott O’Connor (St. Joseph’s Prep) scored once for Manhattan.

Mercer 23, Hampton 3

LSM Thomas Venzie (Downingtown West) had three caused turnovers and a groundball, while Peyton McNeill (Wilmington Friends) had a groundball to lead Mercer.

Hofstra 20, Iona 2

Owen Bosak (Ridley) won 5 of 5 faceoffs as Hofstra ruined the D1 debut of Iona.
