In a back-and-forth game with six lead changes and five instances where the game was tied, Philly grads helped No. 6 and host Maryland defeat No. 2 Syracuse, 11-7, in men’s Division I action on Saturday.
In a defensive battle, the Terps broke away from the Orange with four straight goals by Eric Spanos (Malvern Prep, 2G, 2A), Daniel Kelly and Eliot Dubick to lead 8-5 late in the third quarter. The Terps’ defense was led by short-stick midfielder Eric Kolar (Hill School, 2CT, 2GB) and close defender Will Schaller (Hill School, 1GB, 1CT).
Maryland (3-0) has won 15 of 21 meetings against the Orange, including each of the last seven. Head coach John Tillman is 7-0 in his coaching career against Syracuse. The Terps have held all three of its opponents this season to seven goals.
Richmond 13, Virginia 10
Joe Sheridan (Malvern Prep) had a goal and two groundballs, Jack Pilling (La Salle) contributed two groundballs and a caused turnover and Ethan Gyllenhaal (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) had a groundball as the Spiders stunned host and No. 7 Virginia.
Women’s D1
BC 13, Northwestern 9
Rachel Clark (Conestoga) had two goals and an assist, and defender Lydia Colasante (Tatnall School) added two draw controls, a groundball and a caused turnover to help No. 1 Boston College down No. 1 and host Northwestern on Saturday.
North Carolina 14, Florida 9
Marissa White (Agnes Irwin) had two goals, a groundballs and a caused turnover and Kiley Mottice (Archbishop Carroll) added a goal, a groundball and a caused turnover as No. 5 UNC defeated No. 5 Florida on Saturday. Gianna Monaco (Lenape) had three goals and Gabbi Koury (Owen J. Roberts) had a draw control for Florida.
