North Carolina freshman defenseman Chase Cellucci (Salesianum School) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

During the win over Stony Brook, the Chadds Ford product recorded five caused turnovers and four ground balls, as the Tar Heel defense allowed just four goals in the victory. Cellucci became the third Tar Heel defenseman in the past five seasons to finish with five caused turnovers in a single game, joining Will Bowen (2021) and Peter Thomann (2024).

Cellucci is part of the Carolina defensive unit which ranks third nationally in scoring defense (5.0 goals/game), starting the season 2-0 for the 12th-straight season.

Up next, the Tar Heels travel to No. 4 Johns Hopkins on Saturday at Noon.

Maryland’s Spanos (Malvern Prep) earns Big Ten honors again

Senior Eric Spanos (Malvern Prep) has earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after Maryland’s 11-7 win over then-No. 2 Syracuse on Saturday, Feb. 15. The attackman poured in four points on two goals and a pair of assists, with three of those four coming in the third quarter. It marked his second-straight four-point game.

Earning his first Big Ten Specialist of the Week honors for the season, McNaney led the way in another great defensive effort from the Terps. McNaney made 12 saves and allowed seven goals or less for his third straight game, including a second-half performance where he made five saves and allowed just two goals. McNaney’s .643 save percentage through three games is the third-best in the nation among teams who have played multiple games.

The honor is Spanos’ fourth of his career.
