Immaculata men claim first AEC crown and first NCAA berth with 15-12 win over Marymount

The host Immaculata men’s lacrosse team captured its first Atlantic East Conference title in program history on Saturday afternoon, defeating Marymount 15-12 at Draper Walsh Stadium.

Bailey Manion (New Egypt-NJ) scored eight goals to earn Championship MVP honors. Goalkeeper Matthew Ludlow (Upper Moreland) made 13 saves in goal for Immaculata. The win was Immaculata’s 11th straight, extending its program record winning streak. Immaculata earns its first trip to the NCAA Tournament with the Atlantic East Conference’s automatic bid.

With the victory, Immaculata improves to 14-5 overall after going 5-0 in AEC. Marymount falls to 11-6.

How it Happened
David Azzarano (Radnor) opened the scoring at 13:08 of the first quarter. Manion scored at 11:14 to give Immaculata a 2-0 lead. Joseph Biuso, Seth Panowitz, and Ben Wesolowski (Father Judge) all scored goals to give Immaculata a 5-0 lead. Manion scored his second goal of the game assisted by Aiden Lawrence (Lenape) to increase Immaculata’s lead to 6-0.
Marymount got a goal from Robert Kirkland to make the score 6-1. Manion scored his third and fourth goals both assisted by Azzarano to give Immaculata an 8-1 lead after one quarter of play.
Marymount drew first blood in the second quarter with a goal from Drew Bedard. Panowitz scored Immaculata’s lone goal in the second quarter at 9:00 to increase Immaculata’s lead to 9-2. Marymount scored the final four goals of the second quarter with scores Kirkland, two from Ian Fructuoso and one from Bryan Maguire as Immaculata led 9-6 at halftime.
Marymount scored early in the third quarter with a goal from Bedford. Manion scored back-to-back goals for Immaculata, the second one assisted by Jason Smaron (Father Judge) to put Immaculata up 11-7. Ian Frucuoso scored late in the third quarter as Immaculata led 12-9, heading into the fourth quarter.
Ian Fructuoso scored twice early in the fourth quarter for Marymount to cut the Immaculata lead to 12-11 with 13:35 remaining in the game. Immaculata goalkeeper Ludlow made three saves to keep Immaculata in the lead. Ben Wesolowski increased Immaculata’s lead to 13-11 at 9:04 with a behind the back shot goal off an assist from Azzarano.
Bedard scored for Marymount at 5:23 to cut the lead to 13-12. Marymount had an opportunity to tie the game after winning the face-off, but Ludlow made a save on a shot by Bedard. Immaculata ran time off the clock, and a shot by Ryan Gorman (Marple Newtown) was saved. Marymount carried the ball up the field and Colton Rhoades caused Gavin Taylorson to turn over the ball and grabbed the ground ball for Immaculata. Immaculata called a timeout.
Following the timeout, Manion scored his eighth goal of the game (his 50th goal of the season) with 1:59 remaining to give Immaculata a 14-12 lead. With Marymount desperate, Gorman scored with 1:22 remaining to make it15-12.

Immaculata was 23-25 on clear attempts while Marymount was 11-14.
Marymount had 36 ground balls to Immaculata’s 32.
Marymount won 24 faceoffs to Immaculata’s 5.
Immaculata was 1-4 on extra man opportunities while Marymount was 2-3.

Top Mighty Mac Performers
Manion scored eight goals on nine shots, two ground balls and a caused turnover to earn Championship MVP honors. His eight goals in one game ties the program record Manion already shares with Brendan Dinneen (3/14/2009).
Azzarano scored one goal and three assists, six shots, two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Panowitz scored two goals on three shots.
Wesolowski scored two goals on eight shots.
Biuso scored one goal and had one assist on four shots, with two ground balls.
Gorman scored one goal and added one assist on seven shots.
Lawrence had one assist, six ground balls, four caused turnovers and won two out of three faceoffs he took.
Colton Rhoades (Coatesville) had had three groundballs and a caused turnover.
Goalkeeper Ludlow made 13 saves on 37 shots faced including three saves in the fourth quarter when protecting a one goal lead.
Robbie Wishart and Bradley Mead (Shawnee) each had two groundballs and a caused turnover.
