Heath Jones (Rutgers commit) made 15 saves in goal, and Jake Bickel (Georgetown) scored with 6:26 left to play, lifting host Malvern Prep to a thrilling 11-10 win over three-time defending MIAA champion McDonogh School (MD) today in a non-league boys’ lacrosse opener.
Malvern Prep – ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com and in the PA State Lacrosse Rankings for private schools as well as by Inside Lacrosse in North America – had been featured on ABC Thursday.
The Friars’ first game did not disappoint any lacrosse fan.
The Friars jumped to a 4-0 lead, but by halftime, the lead was only 6-5. McDonogh proceeded to tie the game at 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, and 10-10, but after Bickel (2G, 1A, 1GB) scored the go-ahead goal Jones and the Malvern Prep defense stiffened.
Logan Turley (Harvard) added three goals, an assist, and three groundballs for the Friars, while Owen Mears (Duke) had two goals, two assists and three groundballs. Mike Ortlieb (Duke) had two goals, while Will Tantillo (3GB, Duke), Landen Mathias (3GB), and Jack Carroll (2GB, Cornell) played key roles on defense. Sophomore TJ McDermott won 8 of 10 faceoffs.
Brendan Millon (Virginia) and Eli Schaller (Maryland) each had three goals for the Eagles.
