The host Villanova women’s lacrosse suffered a 14-9 loss to #1 Denver in the BIG EAST Championship Saturday.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats finished a much-improved 11-7 from 2024 as they made their first appearance in a BIG EAST final. Denver (14-5) won its fifth straight BIG EAST title and earned an NCAA berth
Sydney Pappas had a game-high of five goals for Villanova, while Leslie Iorio collected two goals and had two draw controls. Maddy Stoddard and Sophia Corretjer both had two caused turnovers, with Corretjer adding an assist and two ground balls. Rose Christie totaled a high of three assists for the ‘Cats and Cate Gallagher had five saves.
At 14:11 Pappas scored the first goal of the game with Christie getting the assist. Denver answer back not long after. Madison Freeman (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) was the next Wildcat to score, with Corretjer’s help. Going into the second quarter, the score was 2-2.
The Pioneers then went on a seven-goal run. With 4:02 left in the quarter Iorio scored with the help of Christie to make it 8-3. Denver scored two more goals to put the ‘Cats down 10-3 at the half.
Christie took a pass from Carey and scored with 9:45 on the clock to open the second half. Pappas tallied back-to-back, with the help of Elena Torres on one. At the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats trailed, 13-6.
Olivia Ripple led the Denver offense with four goals Raegan while Wilson recorded a six-point day with three goals and three assists. Ryan Dineen earned a hat trick and Lauren Black added a pair of goals.
Alex Dorr earned five wins in the draw circle while Sarah Pokorny added three and Carly Frohnapfel contributed a pair.
