Three players netted hat tricks as the Temple women’s lacrosse team took an 15-6 win over Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon at Howarth Field. The Owls improved to 2-0 with the win.
Julie Schickling (Springfield-Delco) tied a career high with four goals, leading all players. Belle Mastropietro (Springfield-Delco) and Amelia Wright scored three goals apiece, and Mackenzie Roth (Parkland) posted six points (2 G, 4 A). Katie Shallow (Cardinal O’Hara) anchored the defense with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.
How it Happened
> Binghamton scored first at the 9:22 mark, holding the lead until back-to-back goals by Mastropietro and Wright put the Owls up 2-1 before the end of the first quarter.
> Temple would build on these goals, embarking on an 11-0 run from the end of the first through the first ten minutes of the third.
> Schickling secured her hat trick in the second, scoring three times as the Owls extended their lead to 8-1 at halftime. The Temple defense held Binghamton to just one shot in the second quarter.
> Mastropietro, Roth, and Schickling each scored early in the third before the Bearcats responded with two of their own. The Owls added four more in the fourth, with Sabrina Martin and Emily Liberio (Ridley) each scoring their first goals of the season.
Drexel 15, Wagner 3
Nine Dragons found the back of the net as Drexel defeated Wagner in its home opener at Vidas Field. Corinne Bednarik (Downingtown West) led the way with four goals and four assists, three coming in the first quarter.
Alli VanSlyke, Caroline Senich, Kate Quinn, and Karli Dougherty (Archbishop Carroll), also contributed, each scoring their first career goals. Bea Buckley (Penn Charter) also scored once. Drexel improves to 2-0 on the season, while Wagner falls to 0-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Dragons were dominant in the midfield, going 15-15 on clears.
Jenika Cuocco collected nine saves, allowing only three goals.
The Dragons led the turnover battle 18-9.
Drexel capitalized on Wagner’s errors, going 4-7 on free-position shots throughout the game.
Delaware 9, UMBC 6
Riley Gilliin (Academy of Notre Dame) had a goal and two assists as the Blue Hens turned to their defense in the second half to sneak UMBC in their home opener.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS:
Callie Drab recorded 4 points, scoring two goals and assisting on two goals.
For the second game in a row, the Hens had seven goal scorers.
Jaclyn Marszal added two goals, giving her seven on the season.
For the second game in a row, Steph Marszal would record double digit saves with 11, eight of them occurring in the second half.
