Women’s openers: Temple rolls past Colgate; Bednarik (Downingtown West) breaks Drexel mark with 11 points

The host Temple women’s lacrosse team opened its 2024 campaign with an 11-5 win over Colgate today. Seven different Owls scored, with four netting two goals apiece.

Belle Mastropietro (Springfield-Delco) scored twice, dished an assist, and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Taylor Grollman saved six of 11 shots she face in goal.

How it Happened
> Neither team cracked the scoreboard for over eight minutes until the Raiders found the net at the 6:22 mark. Mia Ciancio (Haverford High) responded two minutes later with the Owls’ first goal of the season, firing one home off a rebound from the post.
> Mastropietro added another for Temple in the first, scoring one of two free-position goals for her on the day.
> Temple and Colgate traded blows in the second, with the Owls ultimately coming away with a 3-2 advantage in the quarter. Maeve Tobin, Julie Schickling (Springfield-Delco), and Erin King each scored for Temple.
> The Owls extended their 5-3 lead after halftime, with Mastropietro, Schickling, Tobin, and Camryn Zavacky (Saucon Valley) contributing to a 4-0 run over the first 7:11 of the third quarter.
> Ciancio and Lexi Culp (Cardinal O’Hara) each scored for the Owls in the fourth quarter. Culp’s goal was the first of her collegiate career.
> The Owls defense held Colgate to two goals on seven shots in the second half, forcing the Raiders into nine turnovers in the final 30 minutes.

Game Notes
> Mastropietro has now scored two or more goals in eight straight games going back to last season. She also had a match-high seven shot attempts.
> Mackenzie Roth (Parkland) dished a pair of assists to give her 78 in her career. She’s now tied for fifth in program history.
> Maddie Barber (Middle Township-NJ) led all players with four draw controls.
> Temple outshot Colgate 38-11, with 28 of those shots coming on goal.

Devon Maillet (Strath Haven) and Kait Henning (Garnet Valley) each scored once for Colgate.

Drexel 14, Binghamton 6

Corinne Bednarik (Downingtown West) broke Drexel’s single game points record with six goals and five assists in the season opener, as the Dragons defeated Binghamton from New York. Following her record breaking performance, the fifth year senior is 5th all time at Drexel with 204 career points.

Bea Buckley (Penn Charter) scored two goals in her college debut for the Dragons and in the cage, Jenika Cuocco earned 12 saves including eight in the first half. Alli Van Slyke led the Drexel defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Buckley scored first for the Dragons with help from Bednarik in the opening minute. Alex Wall and Bednarik added four more tallies to extend Drexel’s lead to five. BU answered back with a pair of goals to close out the first quarter.

The Dragons opened the second frame with a goal by Kate Marano in the 17th minute. After a Bearcats tally, Buckley and Marano answered back for Drexel. With 18 seconds left, BU scored on an eight meter but Drexel took an 8-4 lead into halftime. Each team tallied to open the final half before weather stopped play for about an hour.

Following the delay, both teams traded goals and the contest entered the final fifteen minutes with the Dragons up by four.In the 51st minute, Bednarik (3 draw controls) broke the single game points record with an unassisted goal. Allison Drake and Maddie Fowler (Kennett) added two scores late in the non-conference matchup.
