From Press Release
Maddie Yoder (Springfield-Montco) collected five goals and five draw controls and Alexa Capozzoli (Episcopal Academy) had two goals and two assists as the St. Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team scored early and never looked back in a 14-7 win at Villanova on this afternoon.
Back-to-back wins give the Hawks a 2-2 record on the season, earning a victory on their first road trip of the season. Villanova falls to 2-3.
Yoder started the scoring off only 90 seconds in, cutting past her defender before striking the back of the net to put the Hawks up. The Hawks extended the early lead with goals from Kate Fuhrman and Emma O’Neill, forcing Villanova into a timeout with four minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Villanova responded with a goal after the replay started, but Jorden Concordia limited the damage with a save as time was expiring in the quarter to give the Hawks a 3-1 advantage. After the Wildcats struck first in the second quarter, Lisa Ross responded with a goal after being fed by freshman Megan Sanelli (Methacton).
The goal started a four-goal run for the Hawks, Bonnie Yu and Sarah Groark (Episcopal Academy) and adding goals before Yoder struck the net for her second of the game to put the Hawks up 7-2. Villanova finished with the final three goals over the final six minutes of the half to decrease the deficit to 7-5 at the break.
Capozzoli (1GB, 1DC) started the scoring off in a third quarter that saw the two teams alternate goals, Yu finishing the frame off with an unstoppable effort from range to put St. Joe’s up 10-7 with only 15 minutes to play. Yoder all but ended the threat of a Wildcat comeback with two goals over the first nine minutes of play, putting the Hawks up 12-7.
After a well-worked offensive move was capped off by a Capozzoli strike to the bottom corner, Emma O’Neill tallied the fourth goal of the quarter for St. Joe’s with under 20 seconds remaining to finish an emphatic final quarter as the Hawks cruised to a 14-7 victory on the road.
MaryRose Berry (Garnet Valley) led the Hawks’ defense with three groundballs and a caused turnover.
For the Wildcats (2-3), Cara Moreau had two goals and an assist while freshman defender Cailin Harrington (Owen J. Roberts) had two groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
