True Lacrosse is pleased to announce the launch of True Philly Sixes, a new travel lacrosse program focused on the outdoor Sixes game, open to players of any club affiliation.
Sixes is a fast-paced, compact version of lacrosse that has primarily been played at the international, professional, and, beginning with the 2028 Los Angeles Games, Olympic levels. It is characterized by an accelerated, open style of play with quick transitions and non-stop, high-scoring action.
It was created in 2018 to accelerate global growth, increase accessibility and approachability, create greater competitive balance, and reduce the cost and complexity of participation and event staging. It is the next-generation version of the game, and True Philly is excited to be one of the first programs in Philadelphia to offer a fully dedicated Sixes program.
True Philly Sixes will kick off its inaugural year on Sunday, September 15, with tryouts at Kohler Park Turf Field in Ambler, PA, for players in the 2029, 2030, 2031, and 2032 grad classes from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm.
True Philly Sixes will also offer a high school Sixes pickup league that will compete on Tuesday nights in the fall, serving players in the 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 grad classes. The high school league is a non-tryout-based, open signup opportunity.
The inaugural True Philly Sixes fall season for middle school and youth players will be complementary to any fall outdoor lacrosse travel schedule, consisting of six practices and two events.
The True Philly Sixes program will also continue into the winter, offering practices, scrimmages, and a Florida-based event in February.
To lead True Philly Sixes, True Lacrosse has selected current Lansdale Catholic head coach Paul McGovern to serve as director. Coach McGovern has decades of experience coaching in the Philadelphia area, including stops at West Chester East, Council Rock South, Archbishop Wood, Central Bucks East, and Gwynedd Mercy University. He was a founding member of Bucks Select Lacrosse Club and currently serves as head coach of True Philly 2027 Black and True Mid-Atlantic 2027.
He will be assisted in leading the program by True Lacrosse Vice President Peter Burns, True Philly Director Gauntlett Walker, and True Mid-Atlantic Operations Manager Brett Sciascia, plus a knowledgeable and passionate coaching staff.
McGovern, who attended Lower Merion High School and was a two-time captain at West Chester University, said, “I am grateful and very excited for this opportunity to help lead True Philly’s Sixes program. As the game of Sixes is emerging across the country and the world as an important, fun, and fast-paced version of lacrosse, so too are we eager to bring Sixes to the greater Philadelphia area. True Lacrosse has built a strong reputation for offering elite training and player development in our region through their travel programs. We look forward to bringing the same dedication, education, and excitement to the Sixes game.”
