Experienced midfielders and attackmen in the Philly region have something exciting to look forward to this summer. TRP Lacrosse Academy, a new premier training program, is launching a comprehensive series designed to elevate the game of advanced level offensive players.
Leading the academy is Curtis Smith, a former All-American attackman and 2003 graduate of THE Ohio State University. Smith’s impressive career includes ranking #9 on OSU’s all-time leading scorers list and playing for the Victoria Shamrocks of the WLA. Drafted as the top pick by the Colorado Mammoth in the 2003 NLL Draft, Smith brings a wealth of experience and a unique training methodology to TRP Lacrosse Academy. Coach Smith is also supported by his two co-Founders, Brent Beale and Avery Amaya.
Smith’s vision for TRP Lacrosse Academy is simple yet transformative: “Elevating Performance Through Skill and Strategy.” The academy’s training methodology focuses on developing skill mastery with an emphasis on shooting technique, inside shooting, and dodging. However, what sets TRP apart is its emphasis on deception, a critical element in modern lacrosse that Smith believes is often overlooked.
“While I’ve been very impressed with the overall level of lacrosse and coaching I’ve seen since moving to the area, it stands out to me that there has not been enough emphasis on the use of deception in offensive training,” Smith explains. “Incorporating deception into individual skill development with the right technique, repetition, and pace is crucial.”
At TRP Lacrosse Academy, each player’s unique strengths—whether size, speed, quickness, or agility—are harnessed to develop a diverse and unpredictable offensive arsenal. The academy employs a four-stage framework to maximize skill acquisition and game-time application:
1. What: Definition and explanation of each skill.
2. Why: Exploration of underlying principles and strategic value.
3. How: Transition from theory to practice with demonstrations.
4. When: Coaching on the most advantageous moments to execute each skill.
Parents have already seen remarkable results. One parent shared, “My son has been training with Curtis Smith and TRP consistently all year, and the improvements to his game and overall confidence have been phenomenal. TRP’s technique and method to deceptive play are far beyond any other training we have experienced (Lindsay T.).”
TRP Lacrosse Academy has announced its second series of training sessions for the summer, set to take place on July 2nd, 10th, 13th, 17th, and 20th at Gameday Athletics in West Chester, PA. These sessions promise top-tier coaching and a unique approach that focuses on advanced skill development and the strategic aspects of lacrosse.
