Two Philly women made huge contributions in helping the University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team claim its first NCAA Division II National championship last month.
Senior midfielder Riley McGettigan (Perkiomen Valley) and junior defender Katie DeShan (Radnor) were key starters on the Tampa squad that defeated No. 1 ranked Adelphi, 13-8, on May 25 at Winter Park, Fla.
The Spartans (19-3), ranked No. 2 heading into the final, led 8-3 at halftime over Adelphi (19-4) and never were threatened.
McGettigan had a goal, an assist and a groundball while DeShan had a caused turnover and was a standout in keeping Adelphi’s offense to its lowest output of the year.
McGettigan finished the year with 8 goals, 11 assists, 15 draw controls, 12 groundballs while DeShan had 8 groundballs and 6 caused turnovers. Also on the Tampa roster were: freshman attack Isabel McGarvey (Haverford High), junior defender Grace Gilmore (Cherokee-NJ), freshman attack Kaylee VanVladricken (Bayard Rustin), and junior attack Mekelsey Montgomery (Rancocas Valley-NJ).
