Maryland grad student Luke Wierman (Henderson) broke the school record for face-off wins in a career, taking 17-of-29 for 654 overall as the visiting Terrapins defeated Richmond, 12-11, in double overtime Saturday in an NCAA opener.
Also for Maryland, Eric Spanos (Malvern Prep) scored once and defenseman Will Schaller (Hill School) scooped two groundballs, and defender Nick Redd (Wilmington Friends) had a groundball and a caused turnover.
For Richmond, Luke Grayum (Shipley School) had a goal, an assist, and two groundballs and Jack Pilling (La Salle) collected five groundballs.

High Point 14, Mercer 7
Zack Brenfleck (Academy of the New Church) had three caused turnovers and a groundball and Colin Cooke (Mainland Regional-NJ) had one goal and four groundballs to help lead High Point to the win.
Duke 20, Bellarmine 12
Henry Bard (Lower Merion) had two groundballs and a caused turnover to lead the defense and Patrick Jameison (Conestoga) gained the win in goal in his first college appearance with four saves and five goals allowed to help No 2 Duke.
Justin Wescoat (Pottsgrove) had a goal and an assist for Bellarmine.
Cleveland State 12, VMI 11
Freshman Ty Yonas (Exeter) had a goal, two groundballs and a caused turnover in his college debut for the Keydets in defeat.
Denver 13, Johns Hopkins 12
Defenseman Scott Smith (Conestoga) collected four groundball and a caused turnover and Hunter Jaronski (Academy of the New Church) added a groundball for Hopkins in defeat.
Navy 19, Mount St. Mary’s 6
Sean Gallagher (Garnet Valley) had five groundballs for the winning Mids.
Loyola 18, Georgetown 10
Jack Leary (Haverford School) had two groundballs for the victorious Greyhounds.
Hofstra 21, Wagner 9
Chase Patterson (Council Rock South) won 15 of 23 faceoffs and defenseman Will Delaney (Episcopal Academy) had a groundball for Hofstra.
CJ Sweitzer (Springside Chestnut Hill) had three assists for Wagner.
Syracuse 20, Vermont 7
Tristan Whitaker (Episcopal Academy) scored twice for UVM.
