From Press Release

Penncrest High School will be the host venue today for the Laxapalooza 2024, a Community Celebration of the Rose-Tree Media Lacrosse Tradition and to Honor the Memory of Norman Kelly, Jr.

On this day, Optimist boys’ and girls’ youth teams and the Penncrest High Boys’ and Girls’ teams all meet to honor the game of lacrosse. The event again supports the NK Smiles Scholarship Fund. This scholarship was named for the late Norman Kelly, Jr., a beloved teacher, coach and friend. Norm touched countless lives throughout his long career as a teacher in the Rose Tree Media School District and through his many years as a coach in the Optimist Youth Lacrosse Program.

The recipients of these scholarships will be Penncrest students who aspire to careers in education and personify the warmth, generosity and kindness of Norm Kelly, who always “Honored the Game.”

This season over 370 boys and girls in our community have taken to the fields to start the 37th season of Optimist Lacrosse. Event directors thank the RTMSD administration for allowing the programs to use its facilities. Directors also wished to thank all parents,
players and coaches new or familiar with lacrosse for accepting the challenge to participate in this difficult, but wonderful game.
The Iroquois regard lacrosse as “The Creator’s Game”. Our friends at Onondaga, the heart of the Six Nations, often play community games as a method of healing, calling it “the Medicine Game”.

The event today concludes with the Penncrest varsity teams playing Kennett, beginning with the girls’ game at 5 p.m. in the stadium.
