From Press Release
The No. 11 Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 5 Dickinson College, 12-11, in a battle of the Centennial Conference’s top-two teams on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet handed the Red Devils their first conference loss of the season to claim sole possession of first place in the Centennial.
Carter Strauch and Ryder Maston both led the Garnet (11-1, 5-0) with five points on two goals and three assists. The veteran Struach tallied five points for the second-straight contest, while Maston set a career-high in points. Michael Hardiman had his seventh hat trick of the season in a three-goal performance.
Drew Tyson continued to make his case as one of the top goalies in the nation as he held nationally-ranked Dickinson to 11 goals, while making a game-high 14 saves. The sophomore has had more saves than goals allowed in all nine of his starts this season.
For Dickinson (11-2, 4-1), Owen Porter scored four goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
– Swarthmore set the tone early with the opening three goals of the contest. Clay Almgren got the ball rolling with a score at the 8:55 mark, while Von Mabbs and Ryan Kim followed for the team’s second and third unanswered goals. Dickinson snapped its scoreless drought with 5:06 remaining, but were kept off the board for the remainder of the quarter. Hardiman added his first of three goals in the final seconds of play to put Swarthmore back ahead by three scores, 4-1.
– Jackson Brosgol and Hardiman added to Swarthmore’s lead with two-straight scores in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Trailing by five scores, the No. 5 Devils fought back with five-straight goals to shrink their deficit to one goal. In need of an insurance tally, Hardiman answered the call with another late goal to put Swarthmore ahead by two goals with 20-seconds remaining in the half, 7-5.
– Swarthmore was held scoreless in a third quarter that was dominated by defense on both ends. Dickinson scored a pair of goals midway through the stanza to record the only two tallies of the quarter, 7-7.
– Strauch got Swarthmore back on track with a goal in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. Dickinson then tied the game once more, while Maston scored a pair of goals in between a Red Devils score to pull ahead by one with 8:43 left. However, the Red Devils refused to surrender momentum as they answered the Garnet again with a game-tying score. Strauch then added another go-ahead score, before Dickinson forced the game’s sixth tie with 2:13 remaining. Brosgol then delivered the final blow with 12-seconds remaining to win the game for Swarthmore.
