Philly players shined in a “homecoming’ as the No. 8 Penn State (6-1) men’s lacrosse team captured its sixth straight victory today with a 13-7 win over Marquette at Springfield-Delco High School.
The PSU Philly contributions:
*LSM Ryan O’Connor (Springfield-Delco) led the Nittany Lion defense with three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
*Will Peden (Malvern Prep) tallied his second hat-trick of the season, notching three goals.
*TJ Malone (Haverford School) recorded this third straight game of four assists or more, collecting two goals and four assists.
*Matt Traynor (Malvern Prep) tallied his seventh straight multi-goal game of the year, getting two goals and four groundballs.
*Mac Costin (Haverford School) and Luke Walstrum (Council Rock North) each scored once while Jeb Brenfleck (Academy of the New Church) and Jake Morin (Garnet Valley) each had an assist while Brendan Leary (Haverford School) had a groundball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State fired six unanswered goals in the first quarter, and after Marquette opened the second quarter with a pair of goals, Peden scored his second goal of the game with 5:14 remaining in the half to increase the Nittany Lion lead to 7-2.
Marquette answered with two goals to cut the Penn State lead to 7-4 with 3:19 left in the half before Kyle Aldridge and Matt Traynor each scored a goal to put Penn State ahead 9-4 at the half. Both sides only scored one goal in the third quarter before Penn State launched three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter with goals by Peden, TJ Malone, and Mac Costin to put the Nittany Lions ahead 13-5.
Marquette closed the game with two goals to result in the 13-7 Nittany Lion victory.
Junior goalie Jack Fracyon captured his sixth win of the season while recording 12 saves.
Penn 11, Brown 6
In front of the usual strong alumni contingent, the No. 12 Quakers used a strong second half to pull away from Brown at Franklin Field.
Saturday’s game was the Ivy League opener for both teams. The Quakers improved to 5-2 overall while the Bears remain winless at 0-6.
Penn won despite being outshot on the day, 43-29, as Emmet Carroll had another outstanding day with 16 saves (.727 save percentage). Junior Tynan Walsh led Penn’s attack with four points, scoring twice and dishing out two assists. Senior Cam Rubin is heating up; he had three goals on the day.
Lafayette 17, Holy Cross 8
Senior captain Charlie Cunniffe (Episcopal Academy) led the Leopards to their fourth win of the season with four goals and two assists.
Aidan Kopen (Haverford School) added two goals and two assists and goalie Joe Doherty (Malvern Prep) had 12 saves and yielded five goals in over 50 minutes of action.
Villanova 12, Monmouth 11
Villanova (4-3) narrowly defeated Monmouth as Justin Coppola was excellent going 18-of-24 on faceoff opportunities for the ‘Cats.
Matt Licata had four goals and an assist for the Wildcats and Colin Michener (Penn Charter) had three goals. Brendan Dundas (Springside Chestnut Hill College) had three goals and two assists for Monmouth.
St. Joe’s 15, St. John’s 8
Carter Page and Matt Bohmer each had four goals and an assist for the Hawks (3-3).
