From Press Releases

The Cabrini University men’s lacrosse team began its final campaign with a 17-10 win over Haverford College on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers and Fords have played one another for their season-opener 13 of the last 14 years, with Cabrini holding the 12-1 edge over that span.

The Cavaliers surrendered the game’s first goal two minutes into play before a Tommy Vaughan goal assisted by Griffin Ganster (Gov. Mifflin) evened the score at 1. After allowing a second goal to the Fords, six more Cavaliers entered the scoring column to create a 7-2 lead. Ganster had the second equalizer with 2:56 on the clock, while Mario Leone (Clearview Regional) and Connor Herraiz punched in their shots inside the final 40 seconds of the first quarter.

Austin Bolton and Gerry Ulatowski each scored with a man advantage before Dillon McManus put the Cavs ahead 7-2 with 11 minutes left in the opening half. During the second quarter, Haverford stole the momentum from Cabrini, as the Fords scored 4 of the next 5. Evan Wolpert was responsible for three, as he earned a short-order hat trick with goals at 10:13, 9:25, and 5:53. Reid Tietjen followed with his second goal of the contest at 4:03.

Cabrini responded well to Haverford’s swing, as Gavin Lenart (Wilson) and Ganster snuck goals in before halftime. The Cavaliers took control of the contest after the break, as they’d outscore the Fords 6-1 in the third quarter. During the period, Dillon McManus, Mason Lenart (Wilson), Peter Hewitt (Conestoga), Leone, Ganster, and Herraiz netted the goals that gave Cabrini a convincing 16-7 edge to enter the fourth quarter.

Haverford’s Matt Richards (4G0 collected a hat trick in the final ten minutes of play with a Mason Lenart goal in between.

John McCormick (Episcopal Academy)  won 16 of 27 faceoffs for Cabrini, digging 9 ground balls in the process. In addition to McCormick, Sam Kirk (Bishop Shanahan), Zack Riegler, Hewitt, and Herraiz all gathered multiple ground balls. Bear Evans (Garnet Valley) led Cabrini with 3 caused turnovers as eight other Cavaliers forced one apiece. Brayden Skipper got the start in goal and the winning decision, making 10 saves on the day. Hunter Waldron recorded two saves after taking the reigns from Skipper in the fourth quarter.
