Drexel Head Coach Steve Boyle has named Ben Garcia (Springfield-Delco) and Joel Tinney as assistant coaches for the upcoming season.

Garcia graduated in May from St. Bonaventure University with a video production degree. He played in 40 games during his career with the Bonnies and was twice named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic team. Garcia will work with Drexel’s face-off unit and will assist with the Dragons’ defense.

“Ben was a two-time captain,” said Boyle. “I’m looking forward to seeing him work firsthand with our face-off units and defensive midfielders, demonstrating his leadership experience and ability to motivate his peers. We’re excited to have both Ben and Joel join our staff.”

Garcia was a member of the 2017 PIAA championship team at Springfield-Delco and was a two-time all-Central League pick.

Tinney and Garcia will join Tucker Durkin on Boyle’s first staff.

Tinney was an assistant at Michigan last season. The Wolverines won the Big 10 championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Tinney worked mainly with the Wolverines’ offense and goalkeepers and will serve in a similar role with the Dragons. Michigan finished second in the Big 10 in scoring offense.

Tinney spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at perennial-power Calvert Hall in Towson, Md. He helped lead Calvert Hall to the 2019 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and national championship.

“I’m thrilled to add Joel to our staff as an offensive assistant. Joel’s knowledge of the game, lacrosse acumen, ability to communicate and passion for teaching young men were evident during the process. I’m excited to see him work with our players and help them improve both on and off the field.”

Tinney, who played his college lacrosse at Johns Hopkins, played professionally in the National Lacrosse League, Major League Lacrosse and the Premier Lacrosse League from 2018-2021.

During his playing days at Hopkins, Tinney scored 68 career goals and had 119 career points. He was a two-time First Team All-American, a two-time All-Big Ten selection and was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2014. A team captain, Tinney was part of two Big Ten championship teams. Tinney graduated from Johns Hopkins in 2018 with a political science and government degree.

A native of Cambridge, Ontario, Tinney played high school lacrosse at national-power Culver Military Academy in Indiana. He graduated in 2013 and was the second-ranked high school player in the nation as a senior.
