Jake Morin (Garnet Valley) scored the game-winner and TJ Malone (Haverford School) had five goals and four assists as the No. 12 Penn State men’s lacrosse team (4-1) rallied from a seven-goal deficit at halftime to defeat No. 9 Yale, 15-14, today at University Park.
Yale closed out the first half with goal by Peter Moynihan with 1:59 left to make it 9-2. But Penn State came out firing in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals including two by Malone and one each by Ethan Long, Will Peden (Malvern Prep), and Mac Costin (Haverford School, 3G) to cut the Yale lead to 9-7 with 8:22 left in the quarter.
After a Yale goal made it 10-7, Penn State’s Matt Traynor (Malvern Prep, 2G) cut the deficit to 10-8. The Bulldogs then scored three unanswered goals, before the Nittany Lions closed the quarter with a goal from Malone to narrow the Yale lead to 13-9.
Penn State started the fourth quarter with a pair of goals by Costin and Long to shrink the Yale lead to 13-11 with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter. Yale added one more goal in the quarter off the stick of Carson Kuhl with 11:30 remaining to take a 14-11 lead.
But Penn State rallied with three unanswered goals off the sticks of Malone, Traynor, and Costin to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 14. With 59 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Morin won it.
Jeb Brenfleck (Academy of the New Church) scored once for the Lions. Junior goalie Jack Fracyon picked up his fourth straight win in net making 17 saves to improve his record to 4-1 on the year.
Villanova 14, Lehigh 8
Villanova defeated Lehigh as Mason Reale recorded a career-high six points and Tyler Boes recorded his first career hat trick in the win. Colin Michener (Penn Charter) had two goals and an assist for the ‘Cats (2-2).
Matt Brock (Perkiomen Valley) won 7 of 12 faceoffs for Lehigh (2-3).
Drexel 12, Sacred Heart 6
Luke Tomak scored four times as host Drexel defeated Sacred Heart at Vidas Field. The Dragons – who also got one goal each from jack Joyner (Academy of the New Church) and Zach Augustine (Avon Grove) – raced out to an early 6-1 lead and never trailed in the game as they improved the Dragons improved to 3-1.
