The Waterdogs’ Andy Copelan, who has been the only head coach of the new Philly franchise in the Premier Lacrosse League, announced Wednesday that he will step down.
Copelan – who guided the Waterdogs to the PLL title in 2022 after it came in only two years earlier as an expansion squad – will remain on as the interim general manager until a new head coach is found.
Under Copelan, the Waterdogs also appeared in the 2023 PLL championship game and were the No. 1 seed in the 2024 PLL Championship Series before falling in the title game to the Boston Cannons. Philly fans have gotten to know the Waterdogs well since the PLL title games in 2022 and 2023 were held at Chester’s Subaru Park.
The Waterdogs were 1-4 as an expansion team in the 2020 bubble season but improved to 6-4 in 2021.
