Four Stockton University men’s lacrosse players were recognized as a pair of publications announced their NCAA Division III Preseason All-America teams in advance of the 2023 season, which begins next month.
Dante Poli (Central Bucks South) headlined the quartet with accolades from both organizations. Poli was selected to USA Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason All-America Third Team and the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Fourth Team.
Tyler Horvath (Central Bucks South) and Brendan Scanlon (Archbishop Ryan) were named Preseason All-America Honorable Mention by USA Lacrosse Magazine. Luc Swedlund was tabbed Preseason All-America Honorable Mention by Inside Lacrosse.
The four Ospreys are expected to be top players for a Stockton team that enters the newly formed Coastal Lacrosse Conference this spring. The six-team league includes a pair of national powers in Christopher Newport and Salisbury, who are ranked second and sixth respectively in the Nike/USA Lacrosse preseason poll, plus Kean, Montclair State and Mary Washington.
Swedlund is Stockton’s all-time leader in goals (279) and points (339). He ranks third in NCAA Division III history in goals and will race Salisbury’s Cross Ferrara (274 goals) to break the national record of 300 goals. Swedlund also stands ninth in Division III history in goals per game (3.88) and 22nd in points.
Swedlund is a three-time USILA All-America Honorable Mention attack (2022, 20, 19). He led the nation in goals (100) and goals per game (4.76) in 2019.
Poli enters the 2023 season third all-time at Stockton in goals (154), assists (124) and points (278). He needs just 14 assists to become the program’s career leader, and he is likely to join Swedlund as the only two Stockton players ever to reach the 300-point mark.
Following the 2022 season, Poli was voted to the USILA/Dynamic All-America Second Team, becoming the first Stockton player ever to be selected to one of the three USILA All-America teams that are above Honorable Mention.
Horvath received a USILA All-America Honorable Mention spot for his work as a faceoff specialist last year. He finished seven in Division III in faceoff wins (287) and 20th in faceoff win percentage (.667). Horvath also scooped 161 ground balls, which is the second-highest season total in Stockton history.
Scanlon plays an important defensive role as a long-stick midfielder for the Ospreys. He was voted to the CSAC First Team after totaling 34 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers last season. Scanlon has 55 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers in 33 career games at Stockton.
