Saturday’s Philly women’s roundup: Bednarik, Harding lead Drexel; Villanova rolls, Nealon sparks Penn State

Corinne Bednarik (Downingtown West) collected five goals, four assists, six groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers and Grace Harding (Penncrest) scored five goals as the host Drexel women’s lacrosse team defeated Binghamton, 17-5, in a season opener this afternoon at Vidas Field. A five-goal first quarter powered Drexel in the victory.

Lindsey Dean, Hayleigh Simpson, and Bridget Finley (Villa Maria Academy) each tallied two goals of their own. Additionally, Saundra Godshall found the back of the net in the third quarter.

Peighton Bement (Henderson) collected four groundballs, three caused turnovers and a groundball. Jenika Cuocco earned her first collegiate start and recorded six saves and Maura Cissel led DU as she picked up 11 draw controls.

Villanova 18, William & Mary 6

The Wildcats opened strong as fifth year Caroline Curnal set the all-time draw control record at 240, freshman Elena Torres kick started her collegiate career with a whopping five goals, followed by Curnal with 4 and Sydney Pappas with 3. Graduate transfer Olivia Conquest (Haddonfield-NJ) made 10 saves in her first game for the Wildcats.

When asked about Curnal’s stand out performance and her new career record, ‘Nova head coach Jill Batcheller (Archbishop Carroll) said. “Curnal had the best game of her career today. From the draw to the attack, she was electric. She played with her usual confidence and competitiveness, but today we also saw composure. I am so excited about this start for her because there is so much more to come!”

Serena Jacobs from William & Mary started the game off strong by scoring within the first 32 seconds of the game. Villanova quickly counteracted with a four goal spurt ignited by Pappas, Maddie Luer, and two goals from Torres. London Simonides responded with a goal with just under three minutes to go in the first quarter. The Wildcats led 4-2 going into the second quarter.

Penn State 16, Bucknell 6

Kristin O’Neill, had six goals and an assist and Kara Nealon (Garnet Valley) had three goals and two assists for the Nittany Lions. Cam Evitts (Conestoga) added two assists and a caused turnover.

Iona 11, La Salle 8

Laine Walterson (Egg Harbor Twp.-NJ) had a goal and an assist and Emily Stewart (Harriton) had a goal, an assist, four draw controls and a caused turnover to lead Iona.

For La Salle, Maddie Henderson (Harriton) had two goals, an assist, three caused turnovers and three draw controls while Alana Lathan (Phoenixville) scored twice. Ellen Stickney (Lower Merion) added a goal and an assist.

Maryland 15, St. Joe’s 5

Maddie Yoder (Springfield-Montco) scored four goals for the Hawks in defeat.
