Philly grads played key roles Saturday as host Lafayette rolled over Sacred Heart 15-8 in its first win of the 2023 season.

Peter Lehman

Junior Peter Lehman (Council Rock North) exploded for a career-high five goals for the Leopards (1-2).

Lafayette started off strong from the first whistle. Six different goal scorers found the back of the net for the Leopards in the first quarter, giving them a comfortable 6-2 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter was low scoring for both teams, as the Maroon and White led 8-3 at intermission.

At 9:31 in the third, Lehman found the back of the net off an assist by classmate John Mathes. On the next possession only 15 seconds later, Brian Collins dished the ball to junior Charlie Cunniffe (Episcopal Academy) as Lafayette extended its lead to 11-4 with 9:16 remaining in the third.

Lehman netted three goals in the third quarter and Mathes tallied two, extending the Leopards lead to 13-4 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Mathes completed his hat trick at 7:36 in the fourth quarter and senior Ryan Duncan recorded his first goal of the season. Sacred Heart netted two of its own but was not enough to overcome the 15-8 final.

Freshman goalkeeper Joe Doherty (Malvern Prep) secured his first career win in net, playing all 60 minutes and making nine saves. His Sacred Heart counterpart Alex Pazienza also played the whole contest and made seven saves.

Cade Kilbride led the way with three caused turnovers and senior Tommy McGee chipped in two as Lafayette totalled eight on the evening.

Also, LSM Sean Rushton (Malvern Prep) had a groundball and a caused turnover, starting attackman Jack Irish (Malvern Prep) had a caused turnover while Gunnar Bogorowski (Germantown Academy) had a groundball..
