Men’s lacrosse: Traynor brothers (Malvern Prep) lead Penn State to another win over top-ranked Ivy League foe

Matt Traynor (Malvern Prep) had three goals and older brother Jack Traynor (Malvern Prep) had two goals and two assists as the eighth-ranked Penn State men’s lacrosse team picked up its third straight win against a top-10 team with a 10-6 victory today over third-ranked Cornell.

T.J. Malone (Haverford School) and Jake Morin (Garnet Valley) each had a goal and an assist and Mac Costin (Haverford School) scored once and defenseman Pup Buono (Malvern Prep) had two groundballs.

Billy Coyle (Malvern Prep) scored twice for Cornell (4-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 8:33 left in the first quarter off a goal by Matt Traynor.
Matt Traynor scored one more goal in the quarter following a Cornell goal with 3:05 remaining to put the Nittany Lions up 2-1 after the first quarter.
Matt Traynor then opened the second quarter with a goal with 9:41 remaining to put Penn State ahead 3-1 and to complete the natural hat-trick.
Morin added to the Nittany Lion lead with 3:48 remaining in the half to put Penn State ahead 4-1.
Cornell found the net once in the second quarter with a goal from Coyle to send the game into halftime with Penn State ahead 4-2 at the half.
The Big Red started the third quarter with two straight goals to tie the game up at 4-4 coming off the sticks of CJ Crist and Hugh Kelleher.
Penn State answered with three unanswered goals from Luke Mercer, Malone, and Chris Jordan to put Penn State ahead 7-4 with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter.
Cornell closed out the quarter with a pair of goals to send the game into the final quarter with Penn State ahead 7-6.
The fourth quarter was all Penn State as the Nittany Lions scored three unanswered goals in the quarter coming off the sticks of Mac Costin and a pair by Jack Traynor to secure the 10-6 victory.

GOALTENDING
Goalie Jack Fracyon let up a career-low six goals and tallied 16 saves on the day for his fourth straight win in net.
