From Press Release
Tyler Neal scored seven goals as the No. 19 Ursinus Men’s Lacrosse team bounced back from a tough loss to York College today by defeating Colorado College 15-9 in non-conference action at Patterson Field.
With the win, the Bears improved to 2-1 overall and began a stretch of three-straight home games for the week. Meanwhile, the Tigers fell to 0-3 overall after completing a Pennsylvania trip that started at Muhlenberg on Friday evening.
The Bears opened the scoring at the 12:11-mark when senior Jeremy Calabro snatched a loose ball that was mishandled by a Tigers defender in front of the net following a long clearing pass from Bears goalkeeper Jonathan Singer.
Senior Neal quickly added to the lead just over a minute later to make it 2-0 after working around his defender on the left side. The Tigers responded with back-to-back goals to tie the game at two with just over five minutes left in the first quarter, but Ursinus countered with three-straight goals to go up 5-2 at the 1:42-mark.
Freshman Harry Sweitzer (La Salle) started the scoring before Neal added another unassisted goal following a faceoff win. Calabro finished the run on a quick shot after Neal fed him centered in front of the net. Senior Jake Ojert (Central Bucks West) kept the run going to start the second as he snuck it in the right edge of the net after getting a pass from his brother Erik Ojert (Central Bucks West).
The Tigers ended the run by scoring following a faceoff win before Neal countered with his third goal of the half at the 9:55-mark of the second quarter to make it 7-3. Neal answered another Tigers goal to put Ursinus up 8-4 at the 4:21-mark, but Colorado College responded with just over a minute left of the half to hang around at halftime.
The Tigers quickly got on the board to start the third quarter as they scored just 37 seconds in to make it an 8-6 game, but the Bears shut them down for the rest of the quarter to keep the lead intact. Neal added his fifth goal of the game at 8:07-mark before dishing a nifty behind-the-back pass to Calabro for another tally, bringing the score to 10-6 with 1:26 left in the third.
The Bears ultimately put the game away in the fourth quarter as they scored four goals in a span of 1:43 to take a commanding 14-6 lead. Neal finished the Bears scoring with his seventh and final goal of the contest with 6:59 left in regulation.
The Bears held a 52-47 shot advantage for the game while the Tigers held a slight edge in shots on goal at 31-30. Colorado College held a 35-30 advantage in ground balls and faceoffs at 14-13, but the Bears forced 16 turnovers and six failed clears.
Singer earned the win for the Bears after making a career-high 22 saves which was also the most in a single game by a Bears goalie since Elliott Shevitz made 22 against McDaniel in 2018. Ben Anastos suffered the loss for the Tigers after making 15 saves during the full duration.
Neal registered a career-high seven goals which tied for the second-most goals scored by a Bears player in a single game and came one point off tying his single game points record after posting nine. Calabro notched four goals and one assist while Jake Ojert, Erik Ojert, Tyler Falco, and Sweitzer all scored one goal. Declan Maguire led the Tigers with a team-high three goals.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, March 1st as they will host Arcadia at 4:00 p.m.
