Von Mabbs scored seven goals as host Swarthmore defeated Eastern, 17-12, on Wednesday to improve to 2-0.
First year Ryan Pretzer held it down for the Garnet in goal, notching 10 saves and facing down 35 shots. Pretzer and senior Liam Woerner also played a crucial role in securing ground balls, each scooping up five.
Senior Will Bernstein anchored the middle of the field for Swarthmore, winning 14 faceoffs.
Nick Litzenberger led the Eagles with three goals, while Christopher Fanelli (Pennridge), Patrick McClain, Nicholas Fanelli (Pennridge), and Avery Porter each scored twice in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Von Mabbs started the scoring off early for the Garnet, finding the back of the net just four and a half minutes into play off of an assist from Strauch. While the Eagles responded with three goals of their own, a Brosgol shot cut Swarthmore’s deficit to one with 5:20 left to play. Two more Eastern goals would put them up by three before a Carter Strauch score to end the period cut the Eagle advantage to 5-3.
- Both squads traded goals to start off the second, before a Rex Mabbs scorcher ignited a rally, with connections from Strauch and Von Mabbs tying the contest at 6-all with 3:11 left in the half. However, the Garnet would be unable to maintain that momentum, as three Eastern scores in the final minute put them up 9-6 going into the break.
- While a quick Von Mabbs goal to kick off the half was answered by an Eastern goal, keeping the scoreline level, the Garnet would then embark on a legendary run, scoring nine unanswered throughout the third period and into the fourth. Swarthmore would take a dominant 16-10 lead off of four scores from Von Mabbs, two from Ohrman, one from Strauch, one from Brosgol and one from Rex Mabbs.
- While two Eastern goals late in the fourth attempted to cut into the Garnet’s advantage, a resolute bullet from Chambliss with 3:04 left to play shut the door on any Eagles comeback, securing Swarthmore their 17-12 victory.
