It was a memorable season opener for sophomore Chris Lyons (Shawnee-NJ) who scored nine goals as the Yale men’s lacrosse team knocked off Villanova 20-14 on Sunday. Lyons has been rewarded for his efforts by being named the first Ivy League Player of the Week.
Lyons’ nine goals were the most by a sophomore in a game in school history and just one shy of Jon Reese’s overall record of 10 set against Army in 1990.
Four of Lyons’ goals came during Yale’s 7-2 third quarter. The game had been tied at 10-10 at halftime.
Lyons of Medford, N.J., scored 36 goals last year as a first year, including six in a win over Boston University.
