Ridley senior faceoff/middie Owen Bosak knew today’s home game vs. Kingsway Regional (N.J.) in the 11th Annual “Play for the As” was important for his team, his coach, and the community.
“Playing for the A’s is so important to our community because it’s more than just a lacrosse game.” said Bosak, a Hofstra signee after the 16-12 victory. “This event brings so many people together and spreads awareness for Alzheimer’s and we make a huge impact for many families in need.”
Bosak won half of his 30 faceoffs mostly against Kingsway’s Cristian Davis, a Robert Morris commit, and added three assists. Meanwhile, Chris Capozzoli erupted for seven goals and two assists while Matt Glavin had three goals, Luke Showalter two goals and three assists and Aaron Headley one goal and three assists.
NOTE – This year’s event raised $10,218 that will be distributed to families in the region to help with the care of loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease – THANK YOU!
Ridley (8-4) has won five straight games.
This “A’s” event – which featured four games (see summaries below) – was founded in 2013 when Ridley coach Jef Hewlings was coaching at Strath Haven and fully supports families in the area who provide care to loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys thinking and memory skills. It is currently the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. (now affecting over 6 million Americans) and the third leading cause of death among older people (behind only heart disease and cancer).
During the event’s first 10 years, PFAs has raised over $133,000 to support caregivers whose lives are impacted by caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. PFAs works directly with The Community’s Foundation (home office in Springfield PA) to allocate financial resources to families in the area who show a financial need for funding.
“Today we really knew this was a big deal for our head coach, Jef Hewlings, and the community as a whole,” Bosak said. “We knew we had to come out and get the win for him.
“Our offense was outstanding today we had some young guys make huge plays throughout the game and our defense and goalies made stops when we needed them the most.”
Kingsway (5-3) got five goals from Reilly Robichaud and four goals and an assist from Jake Mason. Shane Keener had a goal and three assists.
“Cristian Davis is a great player and I knew that coming in,” Bosak said, “I made many adjustments, but the biggest being instead of trying to push the ball forward quickly to go on fastbreaks I instead just went backwards to myself and moved it to our great attackmen.”
For those that wish to contribute to the effort, secure donations can be made directly to PFAs through TCF at http://weblink.
