Friday’s Philly grad college roundup: Brennan, McNeely lead Monmouth; Clark, Whitaker, Vernon lift UVA & Dyer, Burns spark Michigan

Caroline Brennan (Downingtown East) scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Monmouth University women’s lacrosse team to a resounding 18-9 win over George Mason on Friday afternoon in a season opener.

The Hawks jumped out to an early advantage as they struck four times in the first period. Highlighting that period were goals from Danielle McNeely (Strath Haven, 2G, 1A).

Gabby Rizzio (Springfield-Delco) had a groundball for George Mason.

Virginia 14, Stanford 11

Rachel Clark (Conestoga) had three goals, two assists, two groundballs and a caused turnover, Devon Whitaker (Episcopal Academy) had four draw controls and goalie Ashley Vernon (Shawnee-NJ) made 7 saves as the No. 13 Cavaliers won at No. 14 Stanford.

Michigan 14, Jacksonville 10

Kaylee Dyer (Penn Charter) had two goals and an assist and Maddie Burns (Germantown Academy) led the defense with four draw controls and two groundballs to lead No. 17 Michigan to a triumph over the No. 19 Dolphins.

Maddy Orefice (Cherry Hill West-NJ) had three groundballs and a draw control for Jacksonville.

Cincinnati 14, Kent State 7

Dani Mlkvy (Eastern Regional-NJ) had three groundballs, three caused turnovers and three draw controls to lead Cincinnati.

Men

North Carolina 25, Mercer 5

Antonio DeMarco (Penn Charter) had two goals, Collin Loughead (Episcopal Academy) scored once, Griffin Gallagher (Shipley) had an assist and Grant Pierce (Radnor) had a caused turnover for UNC in the rout.

Syracuse 20, Albany 7

Jackson Birtwistle (Radnor) scored three goals to lead the Orange.
