Former Widener coach Lockard takes over boys’ program at Shipley School

January 30, 2023 by Chris Goldberg

Shipley School is proud to announce that longtime Division III mentor Jamie Lockard has been named its Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse Head Coach, effective for the 2023 season.

Lockard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as both player and coach, as well as leadership in the lacrosse community over nearly two decades. He is the former head coach at Widener University, having had two separate stints (2007-2011 and 2017-2022).

As a player, Lockard played his high school lacrosse at Archbishop Carroll, and went on to be a standout student-athlete for Widener. The four-year letterwinner was most notably a two-time USILA All-America selection, the 2002 MAC Player of the Year, and the 2003 Widener University Male Athlete of the Year.

Lockard’s first head coaching stint was at Widener between the 2007 and 2011 seasons. During his five years at the helm, Widener advanced to four NCAA Tournaments.  He also spent time as head coach at Albright and Wheaton College. During his four-year tenure at Wheaton, Lockard guided the school to the conference tournament three times in four years and reached the conference championship game against perennial power Springfield College in 2012. Lockard returned to Widener in 2017.

Coach Lockard stated, “I am excited to join Shipley as the new Head Lacrosse Coach. It is a unique opportunity to coach a program that has such a rich tradition here on the Main Line. I also want to thank both (Athletic Director) Justin Cooper and Michael Turner and I look forward to being a part of the Gator lacrosse family!”

Remaining on the staff, but in a limited role as assistant coach, former head coach Joe Donnelly will work primarily with the goalies and defense. Trevor Green and Ty Martin will continue to be assistants in the program with Green taking a larger role at the middle school level.

“I would like to publicly thank Joe Donnelly for his time, dedication and commitment to the Boys Lacrosse Program over many years, in particular the last couple years of challenge and transition,” said Cooper. “Coach Donnelly’s support throughout this period and through this process has been, as we have all come to expect, exemplary.”
