Curtis (Pennsbury) named captain for Duquesne women’s team

January 20, 2023 by Chris Goldberg

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 1/20/23 – From Press Release

Duquesne lacrosse head coach Corinne Desrosiers has announced junior attacker Emelie Curtis (Pennsbury) as the captain of the 2023 team.

“I am happy to choose Emelie Curtis for the role this spring, as she truly embodies our top values as a Captain,” said Desrosiers. “She is selfless with a team-first mentality, mature and always acts with integrity. She acknowledges her own weaknesses and still sets the standard high to ensure she is holding herself to our vision so she can help her teammates do the same. The team respects her, and she will help our coaching staff continue to build this program up into the top ranks of the Atlantic-10 where it belongs.”

Curtis, a junior from Yardley, started all 17 games for Duquesne last season. She scored three goals and recorded five assists while emerging as a leader of the team as the season went on.

With 14 freshmen or sophomores on this young 2023 team, she has established herself as a positive veteran presence both on and off the field.

“In a year where many significant changes have been made, where our commitment to winning has never been stronger, we initially felt that we would experience more explosive growth as a team if the leadership was spread among all the players themselves. It is apparent that as a youthful team we will thrive even more under the guidance and empathy of a named voice, one whom has created and sustained relationships with everyone on the team.”

Curtis was a Suburban One National Conference Second-Team pick as a junior. She missed her senior year due to the cancellation of the season (COVID-19).

Duquesne will open the season on Saturday, Feb. 11 at home against Pitt. Curtis and company will look to build on a 2022 campaign where it finished fifth in the A-10.
