Matt Conway has stepped down as Wissahickon boys’ lacrosse coach after leading the Trojans to three Suburban One American Conference championships and a berth in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals in his three seasons as head coach.
Conway said time restrictions from his full-time job with Premier Payments Online along with the birth of his second child were the reasons for his decision.
Conway, who also served as an assistant for six seasons, took over in 2020 when the season was lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021 his Trojans went 18-6 and stunned La Salle in the first round of the PIAA tourney before bowing to eventual runner-up Kennett, 11-8, in the quarterfinals.
The past two years the Trojans went 31-10, giving him an overall record of 49-16.
“I’m very proud of all we’ve accomplished during my time at Wissahickon,” said Conway, who played at Germantown Academy and Ursinus College. “From ten years ago when I first came on as an assistant to these past four seasons as head coach, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching some great kids.
“We had a special run these last three years; in particular which were highlighted by two State playoff wins in addition to multiple District 1 playoff wins. Probably the most memorable for me are some of the relationships I’ve formed with players, coaches, and parents.”
