The PIAA has ruled that Thursday night’s Ches-Mont League girls’ lacrosse game between Great Valley and host Bishop Shanahan was erroneously sent into third overtime and has been changed to a 7-7 tie.
After two 3-minute sudden death overtimes, the game continued to a third overtime and Great Valley’s Kaitlyn Giandonato scored to give Great Valley the apparent win.
Bishop Shanahan appealed the decision today, according to Assistant Athletic Director Paul Meyers.
The new 2023 rule on overtime from the PIAA is: “If the 6-minute ‘sudden-victory’ stop-clock overtime expires without a goal, the game remains a tie.”
The game was a Ches-Mont opener for both teams, which are expected to contend for the league title. Bishop Shanahan, which has won the past two Ches-Mont crowns, is 1-3-1 overall. Great Valley is 1-0-1.
The host Eagles had tied the game, 7-7, on a goal by Claire Fader (two goals) with 11 minutes to play. Silvia Baptista also scored two goals for the Eagles. Giandonato, signed with Pitt, had four goals for the Patriots.
