From Press Release
The 10th annual Play for the A’s event will be held Saturday April 30 and hosted by Ridley High School at Phil Marion Field in Folsom.
The event, started in 2013, fully supports families in the Philly region who provide care to loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The event was launched by then-Strath Haven coach Jef Hewlings, who this year is head coach at Ridley.
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys thinking and memory skills. It is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. (now affecting over 6 million Americans) and the third leading cause of death among older people (behind only heart disease and cancer).
During the event’s first 9 years, Play for the As has provided over $120,000 in support to caregivers whose lives are turned “upside down” by the demands of 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year care of their loved one.
PFAs works directly with The Community’s Foundation (formerly the Taylor Community Foundation) to allocate financial resources to families in our area who show a financial need for funding, and we have received countless, heartwarming thanks from these families for the support we have been able to provide through these efforts. The high school lacrosse event has grown this year to include four varsity HS games, including the first ever girls’ contest (between neighboring rivals Ridley and Interboro).
The schedule for event day is:
10:00 am – Springfield-Delco vs. Pennridge
12:00 pm – Ridley vs. Penn Charter
2:00 pm – Strath Haven vs. Mt. St. Joseph’s (MD)
4:00 pm – Ridley vs. Interboro (women’s)
