Saint Joseph’s used a dominant 8-2 margin over the opening three periods to take down Towson Friday afternoon, 11-8. The Hawks move to 5-2 overall and the Tigers drop to 3-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SJU tallied six unanswered goals up until Towson found the back of the net with 30 seconds left in the first half. The Crimson & Gray held a 4-0 lead after one and 6-1 lead at the halfway point.
All three scores in the third stanza came by the 8:27 mark with St. Joe’s up 8-2 before the clock expired.
Towson claimed a 3-1 margin over the first 12 minutes of the final period to pull the game within four at 9-5. The final 1:03 saw five goals scored for the Hawks to finish up by three.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
Matt Bohmer was tied with a game-high four points on three scores and a helper.
Levi Anderson and Carter Page each had three points with Anderson scoring twice and Page three times.
Austin Strazzulla scored twice with Alex Kenner finding the back of the cage once.
Mac McLaughlin (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) and Tucker Brown each handed out an assist.
Zach Cole (Lenape) was 13-of-17 on faceoffs with eight ground balls and two assists.
Patrick Clemens (Springfield-Delco) continued to be a defensive presence with three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Also, Joe Burnham (La Salle) had four groundballs on defese.
Robbie Seely (1-0) notched the victory with 12 saves.
Princeton 16, Rutgers 11
The game ended. The Princeton men’s lacrosse players went off to stretch in the corner. Then they realized the Meistrell Cup was still sitting at the scorer’s table, so they went to get it.
Senior goalie Erik Peters was the one who lifted it up. It was only fitting. He was the one who did the most to make sure that it was staying in Princeton.
Peters had a career-high 21 saves that helped power the No. 7 Tigers to a win over previously unbeaten and third-ranked Rutgers in front of 1,440 fans at Sherrerd Field.
Peters now has a ridiculous 57 saves in the last three games, which just happened to be against Maryland, Georgetown and Rutgers, all of whom were ranked in the top three at the time. Princeton has rebounded from its loss at Maryland two weeks ago with back-to-back wins against the team ranked third in the national polls, first the Hoyas and now the Scarlet Knights.
The game was preceded by a moment of silence in memory of former Rutgers coach Tom Hayes, the Lacrosse Hall of Fame member and former president of the Federation of International Lacrosse, who passed away earlier in the week at the age of 82.
On any other night, the buzz would have been about Princeton freshman Coulter Mackesy, who was making his second start on attack. Mackesy was amazing himself, with four goals and two assists and several dazzling moves to make put those numbers up.
His fourth goal was his best, with a rocket shot into the top corner of the net. Or maybe his third one was, with a great fake that froze an RU defender and let him get in on Scarlet Knights goalie Colin Kirst, who was strong himself with 13 saves.
Princeton’s Alex Slusher had another big night as well with four goals and two assists of his own, and Chris Brown had three goals and an assist for a four-point night. Stevens scored twice, as did Christian Ronda.
Tyler Sandoval won 19 of 31 face-offs and had nine ground balls.
Delaware 18, Marist 9
The host Blue Hens (5-2) handled Marist (1-5) in a Friday Night Lights matchup at Delaware Stadium. Mike Robinson led with five goals.
Army 18, Lafayette 12
The Leopards (2-4, 0-2) dropped a Patriot League contest at home.
Kalman Kraham had three goals and an assist, Peter Lehman (Council Rock North) had two goals and two assists and Sean Rushton (Malvern Prep) collected seven groundballs, three caused turnovers and an assist at LSM for Lafayette.
