The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the Ivy League’s Preseason Media Poll, which came from the votes of two members of each school’s media contingent. The poll was announced earlier today.
Yale was the choice to win the Ivies, garnering 13 of the 14 first-place votes and 95 voting points overall. The Quakers were picked second, with 82 voting points, while Cornell was picked third with 70 points including the final first-place vote. Princeton was picked fourth, with 59 points, followed by Brown (43), Harvard (28) and Dartmouth (15).
The Red and Blue are ranked No. 11 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll, No. 9 in the 2022 Nike/USA Lacrosse Division I Men’s Preseason Top 20 Poll released by USA Lacrosse Magazine and No. 8 in USILA / Dynamic 2022 Coaches preseason poll.
The Quakers have a 12-game slate in 2022 that features five home games including the season opener on February 19 when the Quakers host No. 4 Georgetown. During the spring, Penn also has a pair of neutral-site games with No. 3 Duke and Penn State.
2022 Preseason All-American Sam Handley returns for Penn after missing the final four games of the 2020 season with an injury. During his first year with the Red and Blue Handley set Penn freshman records in goals (35), assists (26), and points (61). His 61 points rank No. 4 all-time by a Quaker in a single season.
The top returner on attack for the Quakers is Dylan Gergar. He had a breakout season in 2020. In just five games, he set new career highs in goals (19), points (23) and groundballs (7). He scored seven goals and added two assists in Penn’s win over Cabrini in 2021. Gergar has appeared in 22 games and started each of the last six for the Quakers. He’s scored 43 goals to go along with 11 assists for 54 career points.
Penn opens the 2022 campaign at Franklin Field on Saturday, February 19 at noon against Georgetown.
