Five-time Big Ten champion Terrapins named unanimous preseason favorite by coaches
Maryland has been voted unanimously by the conference coaches as the 2022 Big Ten men’s lacrosse preseason favorite. The Terrapins are followed in the preseason poll by Rutgers in second, Johns Hopkins in third and Michigan in fourth, with Ohio State and Penn State rounding out the poll in fifth and sixth, respectively. All six head coaches voted in the preseason poll and selected three players from their own teams to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List.
Last season, Maryland reached the NCAA championship game following a perfect 10-0 record in conference play and the program’s third Big Ten Tournament title. The Terrapins finished the season with an overall record of 15-1 and earned the program’s 12th NCAA runner-up finish.
The Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List features 18 standouts from the six schools, including five 2021 All-Big Ten honorees. Maryland’s Brett Makar and Logan Wisnauskas, Ohio State’s Jack Myers and Rutgers’ Colin Kirst were each named first-team All-Big Ten last season, while Connor DeSimone from Johns Hopkins was a second-team selection. Kirst was also named the Big Ten Specialist of the Year in 2021.
The 2022 Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament will begin on Saturday, April 30, and will feature a six-team field with the top two teams from the regular season receiving first-round byes. The quarterfinals will be played on the campuses of the higher seeds on Saturday, April 30. Maryland will host the semifinals on Thursday, May 5, and the championship game on Saturday, May 7.
