William Smith College senior defender Mekayla Montgomery (Rancocas Valley, NJ) has been named a US Lacrosse Magazine 2021 Division III Women’s Preseason All-Americans.

Mekayla Montgomery

Montgomery was a 2020 Academic All-District 3 At-Large selection last year as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Montgomery is a psychology and educational studies double major. A two-time Liberty League All-Academic team selection, she was named to the Psi Chi National Honor Society in psychology. The co-president of HWS’ One Love Club, Montgomery was presented with last year’s Madeline Buckley ’15 Award for her character, teamwork and citizenship. Montgomery was a finalist for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award.

On the field, Montgomery is a three-time All-America selection. She was named to the 2020 Inside Lacrosse Women’s All-American first team.

A team captain, Montgomery started all five games last spring. She led the team with 19 draw controls, had 15 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. Montgomery won a season-high 10 draws in the Herons’ 18-3 win over Oswego.

A transfer from Gettysburg, Montgomery has played in 44 games for the Herons. She holds the William Smith game, season and career records for draw controls. Montgomery won 179 career draws, despite playing 19 fewer games than the previous record holder, Lucy Johnson ’12.

She won 93 draws in 2019, shattering Johnson’s record of 72 from the 2012 season. Montgomery won 11 draws against Vassar last year. Her 10 wins against the Lakers this season are second on the single-game list. In addition, Montgomery is fifth on William Smith’s all-time list with 83 caused turnovers. She added 122 ground balls.
