Radnor coach Addis steps down; led Raptors to PIAA championship in only season on field

Kristin Addis, who guided Radnor to the PIAA Class AAA championship this year in her only season as head coach on the field after returning to her alma mater, has stepped down for family reasons.

Addis was hired after the 2019 season, but didn’t get to coach on the field in 2020 due to the pandemic. But in 2021, she guided the Raptors to an 11-5 victory June 12 over Manheim Township for the school’s fourth PIAA crown.

Radnor finished 22-2, No. 1 in the final Phillylacrosse.com Rankings and among the Top 25 in most National polls. The Raptors were second in the Central League and placed third in the District 1 tournament.

Addis, who informed her players of the decision Friday, gave this statement:

“With a heavy heart, I have decided to step down. This was the toughest decision I have ever had to make,” she said. “The program means so much to me and I’ve enjoyed every second as a player and most recently as a coach.

“The decision was based solely on the needs of my family. I always dreamed of being a Mom, so for now, it’s time for me to lead my team at home.”

Addis said she will cherish her two season as Radnor coach.

“It has been such an honor to take over the program that gave so much to me,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of coaches, players, parents and administrators. I am so proud of everything that we accomplished together and have memories that will last a lifetime.

“The class of 2020 bought into the vision and laid the foundation for this season. The class of 2021 wanted to learn, improve, and be pushed. They had a championship mentality day in and day out. The team found the perfect balance between having fun and taking care of business. The returners gained valuable experience that will help them leave their own lasting legacies. I look forward to cheering them on!”

Addis made headlines in April after delivering her second baby daughter, Brynn. Addis was discharged on a Thursday and had her husband guarantee the nurse she would not coach that day against Lower Merion. But then the next day Addis stunningly showed up to coach her Raiders to a win over arch-rival Archbishop Carroll.

“We were all so excited about the baby and told her to stay home, that we’d be OK,” said Rador co-captain and All-American senior midfielder Tori DiCarlo. “We see two assistants and then we walk over to the bench and she is there! We asked her, ‘Why are you here?’

“She was so dedicated. We were so thankful we had her as our coach.”

Addis, the former Kristin Hopson, was a three-sport standout at Radnor grad and served served as captain of the lacrosse, basketball and field hockey teams as a senior and was a two-time High School Lacrosse All-American. She starred at the University of Notre Dame and went on to coach at Delaware (twice, for seven seasons) and James Madison (one season).

Addis earned All-Central League honors at Radnor in all three sports, was named the Main Line Times Female Athlete of the Year in 2003.
