Philly women to compete on US National Team at IWLCA President’s Cup this weekend in Texas

The U.S. women’s national team is set to make its debut in Texas with an appearance at the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) President’s Cup this weekend. The U.S. men’s national team played in San Antonio in January 2020 for the USA Lacrosse Spring Premiere, but this will mark the first time the women’s team has competed in Texas.

A total of 34 players will compete for the U.S. team this weekend, including a pair of Texas natives. Lindsey McKone, a graduate of St. John’s School from Bellaire, Texas, and Charlotte North, an Episcopal School graduate from Dallas, will represent Texas on the USA squad. McKone was a first team All-Big Ten selection for Northwestern last year while North won the Tewaaraton Award as the nation’s top player while leading Boston College to the NCAA Division I championship.

The U.S. team will hold three training sessions and play a Blue-White public exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. at Harold Patterson Sports Center in Arlington, Texas. The U.S. players will also serve as guest coaches for teams during the IWLCA President’s Cup, one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious recruiting events, an event that features more than 350 teams competing.

The U.S. team is in training for the 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship, which will be held from June 29 through July 9 at Towson (Md.) University. It’s the first time the U.S. has hosted the world championship since 2005 and the U.S. will be aiming for its fourth straight world title after winning in 2009, 2013 and 2017. The upcoming championship was originally scheduled for 2021, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A record 30 nations are expected to compete in 2022.

Jenny Levy, the head coach at the University of North Carolina, is the U.S. team head coach and the U.S. roster this weekend includes seven members of the 2017 U.S. world championship team — Becca Block, Kristen Carr, Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Marie McCool (Moorestown), Alice Mercer and Kayla Treanor.
