Frankie Labetti (Moorestown) won 16 of 23 faceoffs and Shane Osborne (La Salle) scored twice as host Fairfield toppled Lafayette, 13-12, today in non-conference play.
Patrick Drake (Salesianum School) added a goal, two groundballs and a caused turnover for the Stags (1-2).
Four different Leopards (0-2) netted multiple goals and junior Ryan Ness stopped 14 shots.
The sides played the first quarter even at three goals apiece before Fairfield opened up an 8-5 edge at the break, powered by a three-goal run in the second frame. Lafayette came out of the locker room strong, finishing off the third period with three straight of its own, two coming off the stick of freshman John Mathes, to pull back within one, 10-9, into the fourth.
However, the fourth was controlled by the home side as three of the five goals went Fairfield’s way to see out the 13-11 final. The win moves the Stags to 1-2 on the year overall, while Lafayette falls to 0-2 this season.
Mathes was one of four different Leopards with two goals on the afternoon, joined by classmates Carter Cecil, Charlie Cunniffe (Episcopal Academy) and Kalman Kraham. Cunniffe and Macklin Fitzpatrick notched the lone assists on the day for the Maroon and White.
Overall, Fairfield led in shots, 46-41, and won 19 of the game’s 27 faceoffs. The Stags won ground balls, 34-31, and converted on both of their extra-man opportunities, while turnovers finished at 15 apiece and Lafayette went 0-for-4 with the extra attacker.
