Fourth-period goals 32 seconds apart by Luke Waters and MVP Blake Borges broke a 7-7 tie and helped give Brunswick School (CT) a thrilling 9-8 win Friday over Haverford School in the opener of the second annual GEICO High School Lacrosse Showcase at Malvern Prep.
The event, aired on ESPNU, featured two games with Philly as the Spotlight host. In the nightcap, Malvern Prep dominated Lawrenceville School (NJ), 17-3.
Haverford (6-3) gave Brunswick (7-0, ranked No. 3 by Inside Lacrosse) all it could handle, rallying from a 5-2 deficit to tie it, 7-7, on Geordy Holmes’ fourth goal late in the third period.
After Borges (three goals, Syracuse signee) made it 9-7, Ryan DiRocco (two goals) took a Teddy Malone feed to draw the Fords within 9-8 and they had a chance to tie, but Luke Schlank made a game-winning save as time expired.
Holmes had four goals and Michael Bozzi and Wills Burt each had a goal and an assist for Haverford. Chuck Cacciutti had 8 saves. Will Costin (4 GBs), Colby Kim and Michael King led the Fords’ defense.
In the second game, 10th-ranked Malvern Prep ran out to a 10-2 first-half lead and coasted to improve to 7-1. Eric Spanos led the attack with five goals while Colin McGill had three goals and an assist and Will Peden had two goals and four assists. Nick Potemski added two goals and an assist and freshman Dennis Udo scored twice Malvern won 14 of the 23 faceoffs and Pup Buono led the defense with five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
