5/2/10 – Sunday’s women’s college roundup: Penn outlasts Dartmouth for Ivy title; Navy tips Lehigh for Patriot crown

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/10

Megan Smith (Henderson) and Maddie Poplawski (Springfield-Delco) scored late in the game to break a 7-7 tie as host Penn held off Dartmouth, 9-8, today at Franklin Field to claim the first-ever Ivy League women’s tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney.

Dartmouth, after falling behind, 7-2, had stormed back to tie the game at 7-7 with 17:57 to play.

After Erin Brennan picked up the ensuing draw control, she drew a foul on Dartmouth’s Sarah Plumb. Facing a tough angle, Brennan chose to wave off the shot and make a pass once play resumed. That pass found a wide-open Smith at the side of the cage and the senior immediately put the ball behind Dartmouth’s Julie Wadland to give Penn back the lead.

Just 29 seconds after the goal Giulia Giordano was tagged with a yellow card, sending her off the field for three minutes. Penn (14-3, ranked No. 6) hunkered down on defense and halfway through the penalty Emma Spiro caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball and raced out of danger.

5/2/12 – Women’s lacrosse: Philly girls helped Navy win 3rd straight Patriot League crown, attain national ranking

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/12
From Press Release

Navy’s Philly girls, from left, are Beth Young, Lindsay Rheiner, Kathy Young, Aimee Gennaro, and coach Cindy Timchal (Haverford High, West Chdster Univ). All four Philly girls played for the Phantastix club team.

One day after winning its third straight Patriot League Tournament Championship, the Navy women’s lacrosse team (17-2) made its first appearance of the season in the deBeer Women’s Lacrosse Media Poll, appearing at No. 18. The Mids earned 20 voting points this week and to share the No. 18 spot with Princeton. Northwestern, one of the two teams to defeat Navy this season, is ranked No. 1, followed by Florida, Syracuse and Maryland.

This is the fifth time in the last three years that Navy has been ranked in the media poll’s top 20. The ranking of No. 18 matches Navy’s best showing, which had previously been in the May 10, 2010 poll after the team defeated Sacred Heart, 12-2, in an NCAA Play-In Game.

Navy will play in an NCAA Play-In Game this Saturday at 1:00 PM (PT) at Oregon (14-4), the winner of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. This is Navy’s third straight year in an NCAA Play-In Game. Navy was victorious in the play-in game in each of the last two seasons to advance to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

Led by seven-goal performances from junior Kathy Young (Villa Maria Academy) and sophomore Aimee Gennaro (Archbishop Carroll), Navy (17-2) won the Patriot League Championship by defeating Holy Cross, 18-11, on Sunday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

5/2/14 – Girls’ lacrosse: Wait is worth it for Springfield-Delco in 9-7 win over Harriton

By Harry Chaykun
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/2/14

The Central League schedule-maker had the Harriton vs. Springfield (Delco) rematch of the 2013 District 1 girls title contest scheduled for March 25.

The weatherman had other ideas, sending cloudy, damp and – for a brief time – snowy weather that early spring day.

“We’ve been waiting to play them the whole season,” senior Aly Gormley said Friday, after scoring four goals to help the Cougars (14-2 overall, 9-1 Central League) earn a 9-7 decision over the defending district and PIAA champion Rams (10-5, 7-2) at Halderman Field.

With the win, Springfield, which has won six in a row since a Spring Break loss in Virginia, has all but locked up the Central League’s No. 2 seed for the upcoming district playoffs. Harriton, which had a seven-game winning streak halted, should be the third Central seed.

Junior Emily Santana joined Gormley with four goals for Springfield. She also chipped in with one assist and was the key factor in her team claiming a 13-5 advantage on draw controls.
