5/16/09 – College wrap: Penn defeats Duke, 10-9 in OT, to advance to NCAA Final Four

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/16/09

Senior Becca Edwards (Springfield-Montco) scored with five seconds remaining in overtime as Penn defeated Duke, 10-9, Saturday to advance to the NCAA final four for the third consecutive year. The Quakers will face Northwestern in the NCAA semifinal game Friday, May 22 at Towson, Md.

Penn led 7-2 at the half, but fell behind 9-7 with 9:11 remaining in the game. The Quakers scored the final two goals of regulation and Edwards tallied the only goal in overtime. It marks the second time this season Edwards scored the overtime winner and was her 100th career point. She became the 16th Penn player to reach the century mark.

The Quakers started strong with a 4-0 run in the opening 12 minutes. Ali DeLuca opened the scoring just two and a half minutes into the contest. Edwards scored the next two and then assisted newcomer Erin Brennan on her first of the day before Duke called a timeout.

The huddle did the trick as the Blue Devils came out with two quick goals just 1:23 apart. Penn regained control and scored three more goals under the 10-minute mark to hold a 7-2 lead going into the break.

Harriton High’s girls’ lacrosse program has some great history.

Harriton seniors on the Central League quad-champions are (from left) Megan Rubenstein (Soccer at F&M), Carolyn Flannery (Richmond), Jackie Marshall (Playing at Widener), Laura Walzer (Vanderbilt), Betsy Hurtado (Cornell), Carli Sukonik (playing at Lehigh), MacKenzie Morgan (Ohio State)

The program won the first District 1 champion in 1976 and produced US Lacrosse Hall of Famers Cherie Greer (three-time All-American at Virginia) and Bonnie Rosen (National champion at Virginia, now Temple coach) as well as former Virginia great and current Cavaliers coach Julie (Plzak) Myers.

Now, the 2011 Harriton team is making its own history.

Last week the Rams, under coach George Dick, finished in a four-way tie (at 9-2) for their first Central League championship with Garnet Valley, Springfield-Delco and Radnor.

Jessica Goralski said being a part of Tuesday’s Friends’ Schools championship for Friends’ Central was a perfect ending to a season of major change.

“I love it here; the people here are amazing,” said Goralski, a Stony Brook signee who starred at South Jersey power Moorestown the past three years and transferred to City Avenue for her senior year. “It’s hard switching in your senior year. A lot of people would frown on that but it was the best decision I ever made in my life.
