Katie Detwiler

Loyola University’s roaring start to its shortened 2020 season was recognized Tuesday morning, as sophomore defender Katie Detwiler (Archbishop Carroll) was one of five Greyhounds included among Inside Lacrosse’s Maverik/Media All-America selections for the spring.

The Greyhounds were a perfect 5-0 on the year, with four wins against nationally-ranked opposition, when the remainder of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 public health threat.

Detwiler earned Patriot League Defender of the Week honors in three of Loyola’s four weeks of competition in 2020. Frequently matched up against the opposition’s top scoring threat, she limited two Tewaaraton Watch List standouts in Johns Hopkins’ Maggie Schneidereith and Florida’s Shannon Kavanagh to a combined three goals and five turnovers. Detwiler totaled 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers defensively, and she also added 21 draw controls, , winning a career-high six draws in back-to-back wins at Florida and Penn State.

JMU’s Matey (Archbishop Carroll) is HM AA

A pair of James Madison standouts were recognized on the 2020 Inside Lacrosse Media All-America Team, as both redshirt junior Molly Dougherty and sophomore Rachel Matey (Archbishop Carroll) were named Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Rachel Matey

Matey transitioned from midfield to start in all six games at defense this season. She had 10 caused turnovers and 11 ground balls while winning 27 draw controls. She also scored one goal. Matey ranked fourth in the CAA in draws per game (4.5), fifth in caused turnovers (1.67) and 10th in ground balls (1.83). She tallied a career-high eight draw controls at High Point and had three caused turnovers in the Penn State win.

UNC’s Growney (Conestoga) is HM AA

Five North Carolina women’s lacrosse players have earned spots on the 2020 Inside Lacrosse All-America teams, the magazine announced on Tuesday.

Senior Katie Hoeg and juniors Jamie Ortega and Emma Trenchard were named to the first team, giving the Tar Heels the most first-team selections of any school. Securing honorable-mention honors were junior Scottie Rose Growney (Conestoga) at attack and redshirt junior Taylor Moreno at goalie.

Scottie Rose Growney

After scoring 10 goals in three NCAA Tournament games in 2019, Growney continued her emergence as an offensive force. Her 22 goals, five assists and 27 points were all career highs. Her 31 draw controls were also a career high and led the team. On Feb. 25, she was tabbed the IWLCA Division I and ACC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a career-high six goals in the win over Maryland. Her six goals were the most scored by a Tar Heel against the Terrapins since Erin McGinnis (1996-99) had six on April 24, 1999.

VT’s Frank (Moorestown) makes HM as a freshman

Two thirds of the Virginia Tech lacrosse program’s fantastic midfield trio were recognized as Inside Lacrosse All-Americans Tuesday morning the publication announced. Paige Petty earned third team honors while Kayla Frank (Moorestown) was recognized as honorable mention.

Freshman Frank was the nation’s highest scoring rookie in 2020 scoring 45 points on the season. She did so with 23 goals and 22 assists. Frank scored eight points in her Virginia Tech debut against Davidson and would tally hat tricks in five of the 10 contests this season. She made history on February 19 when she dished out eight assists in a game vs. Radford, setting a new program record. Frank notched back-to-back game winners during the Hokies’ road trip to Cincinnati and Louisville. Her 45 points rank her sixth in D1 for the 2020 season.
