Philly women, men star around the country in D1: Browndorf, Wills, Sopko, Gucwa, Reilly

Freshman Becky Browndorf (Upper Dublin) started on defense and had two caused turnovers and a groundball to help the No. 14 Florida lacrosse team complete a stunning upset of top-ranked and defending national champions Maryland on Saturday afternoon, winning the game 15-14 after scoring with less than a minute to play.

The Gators – coached by Spring-Ford grad and former Temple standout Amanda O’Leary broke Maryland’s 86-game home win streak and serve the Terps their first home loss since March 10, 2012.

This win is also the first time since April 12, 2012 that the Gators have knocked off the top-ranked team in the IWLCA rankings (Northwestern, 8-7).

Shannon Kavanagh led Florida on the offensive end, recording a career-high eight goals and tallying the gae-winner with 49 seconds to play.

Loyola 16, Johns Hopkins 7

Emily Wills (Agnes Irwin) had three goals and two assists and Katie Detwiler (Archbishop Carroll) had three draw controls and two groundballs on defense.

Syracuse 15, Albany 3

Sam Swart (Archbishop Carroll) had three goals and an assist for the Orange.

Iona’s Abby Natoli

Iona 9, New Hampshire 8 (Sunday)

Emily Stewart (Harriton) had a goal, two draw controls and a groundball, defender Erin O’Donnell (Bishop Shanahan) had two groundballs and a draw control and defender Abby Natoli (Central Bucks West) played much of the game to help Iona to its first win.

UNC 24, High Point 3 (Friday)

Scottie Rose Growney (Conestoga) had three goals and an assist for the Tar Heels.

George Mason 20, William & Mary 11

Erin Donoghue had six goals and one assists and Deanna Balsama (Washington Township) had two goals and three assists for GM.

Men’s (Saturday)

Jacksonville 11, Marquette 9

Jacob Greiner (West Chester East) had five goals and three assists.

Bucknell 14, Sacred Heart 11

Tommy Sopko (Conestoga) had four goals and four assists for the Bison.

Notre Dame 17, Cleveland State 7

Tommy McNamara (Haverford School) had two goals and an assist and Quinn McCahon (Malvern Prep) scored twice for the Irish.

Loyola 10, Johns Hopkins 7

LSM Ryan McNulty (Bishop Shanahan) had a goal and three groundballs for the Greyhounds in their win. Forry Smith (Haverford School) scored three goals for the Blue Jays.

Mount St. Mary’s 11, Towson 10

Sam Stephan (Notre Dame-NJ) won 14 of 24 faceoffs and Bryan McIntosh (Central Bucks East) led the Mount defense with four groundballs and a caused turnover.

Manhattan 10, VMI 8

Freshman Kyle Gucwa (Bishop Shanahan) had six goals and an assist for the winners.

Georgetown 14, UMBC 8
James Reilly (Conestoga) won 19 of 24 faceoffs for the winning Hoyas.

Syracuse 17, Binghamton 4

Jakob Phaup (Souderton) won 8 of 10 faceoffs and Jacob Buttermore (Garnet Valley) scored once for the Orange.

Navy 19, Forman 3

Goalie Ryan Kern (Salesianum School) made 2 saves and did not allow a goal in a half of play to earn the win as the Middies rolled.

Fairfield 18, Stony Brook 16

Frankie Labetti (Moorestown) had one goal and won 16 of 35 faceoffs while Patrick Drake (Salesianum School) had three assists for Fairfield.

Providence 16, Bryant 9

Luke O’Grady (Haverford School) scored once for Providence.

Wagner 9, LIU 8

Mikey Vanaman (St. Augustine Prep) had a goal and an assist for the winners.
