From Press Release

After a tight first half, the Philadelphia Wings dominated in the second half and defeated the New York Riptide, 14–6, in National Lacrosse League action Friday before 7,183 at the Wells Fargo Center.

The game helped raise money for the Philly Shootout for Soldiers event (June 22-23 at Episcopal Academy) on Local Heroes Night. Episcopal coach Chris Bates was a player for the original Wings team for 7 years.

From the opening whistle through the early portion of the second, it was a back-and-forth contest as both sides traded two goals runs. Philadelphia was able to get ahead 4-3 at the end of the first but a goal from Jean Luc Chetner just 31 seconds into the second tied things up at four.

The majority of the second was very defensive heavy with both Zach Higgins (51 saves for the Wings) and Alex Buque standing tall in their respective nets. But Blaze Riorden was able to get one to go for Philadelphia and Tyler Digby scored off a bouncer late in the second, tying things up at five as the half came to a close.

Philadelphia shot came out of the half on fire. The Wings started the third on a three-goal run, including two from Cory Vitarelli, to to push their lead out to 8-5. Connor Kelly stopped the bleeding for New York, but Vitarelli scored late in the third to put the Wings up 9-6 heading into the fourth.

Vitarelli’s goal to end the third sparked six-goal Philadelphia run to end the game. Brett Hickey tallied three of those six for the Wings, including the last two, to help secure the 14-6 victory for the Wings.

Philadelphia was led by Hickey who tallied six points (5G/1A) and Kiel Matisz who also tallied six points (2G/4A). Kevin Crowley (Fusion co-founder, Shipley School assistant coach) also had seven points (1G/6A) in the win. Matt Rambo (La Salle grad, Springside CHS assistant) had a goal and two assists. Tyler Digby tallied four points (2G/2A) for New York while Tyson Gibson dished out two assists.

The Wings improved to 5–2 on the season and remain undefeated at home while the Riptide drop to 1–6. Zach Higgins was a brick wall again, saving 51 of the 56 shots he faced and only allowing 1 goal past him in the 2nd half.

The Wings play again next Friday the 31st against the Georgia Swarm in Philly at 7pm Eastern. The game can be seen on B/R Live.
