The host Neumann men’s lacrosse team opened its 2020 season today with a resounding win, routing Alvernia, 23-4, in non-conference action.
Chris Bellon (Cherry Hill West) paced the Neumann attack with eight points on seven goals and an assist. Drew Conlon (4 g, 2 a) and Rich Marshall (3 g, 3 a, Perkiomen Valley) each added six points, while Colin Blake (Springfield-Delco) and Ryan McNichol (Cardinal O’Hara) both chipped in with two goals and an assist. Brendan Risley (Ridley) made 10 saves in goal to pick up the win.
The Knights took control from the opening face-off, scoring just 1:26 into the game via a goal from Conlo. Neumann scored five more times to take a comfortable 6-0 lead. Conlon had two goals and an assist in the opening 15 minutes, while Blake also tallied twice for the hosts. Alvernia got one back late in the quarter but still trailed by a score of 6-1 after one.
Neumann outscored the Golden Wolves 7-1 in the period. Bellon and Conlon each scored twice for the Knights in the frame to go along with goals from McNichol, Brett McLaughlin (Interboro) and John Giovinazzo (Archbishop Carroll) as the hosts took a commanding 13-2 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would be Marshall’s time to shine, as the sophomore standout played a part in four of the Knights’ six goals in the frame. Marshall assisted on two markers, and found the back of the net twice on his own, including a tally with just one second left in the quarter that gave Neumann a 19-3 lead moving to the fourth. Two goals from Bellon, and one each for McNichol and Will Petraglia rounded out the scoring in the period.

Matthew McLaren (La Salle) had 8 saves to earn the win for Montclair in its opener.
