From Press Release
The Wilmington University athletics department and men’s lacrosse team is mourning the loss of incoming student-athlete Walter deBruin who passed away unexpectedly from an acute asthma attack on Sept. 6. He was 19 years old.
“Walt was going to be a terrific addition to the program,” head coach Christian Zwickert said. “Walt was quiet and reserved off the field, until you got to know him, and was a strong and aggressive offensive midfielder, using his 6-5 frame to his advantage. He was going to be perfect for Wilmington and Wilmington was going to be perfect for him. We all mourn his loss and are praying for him and his family during this extremely difficult time.”
“The news of Walter’s passing was heartbreaking for the University and lacrosse community,” Director of Athletics Dr. Stefanie Whitby said. “We were looking forward to Walter joining our men’s lacrosse team and knew he was going to make an immediate impact. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the deBruin family and friends.”
Walt graduated from the Salesianum School where he played varsity lacrosse and had just begun his sophomore year at Wilmington University, transferring in from Hood College in Frederick, Md. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Hockessin.
“Walt was a very talented player,” said Salesianum School head coach Bobby Healy. “A three year Varsity letter winner. He was an outstanding teammate and brother who always had a smile on his face. We will make sure we are there to support the DeBruin family through this difficult time.”
