For the second week in a row and fourth time in her career, junior goalkeeper Mikaila Cheeseman has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. Cheeseman helped lead the University of Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse team to a 2-0 week with dominating wins over Rutgers and Yale. It was announced Wednesday afternoon that Cheeseman has been named IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week as well.
Cheeseman has been a consistent force in net for the Quakers, as Penn ranks third nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 5.75 goals per game through four contests. Last week, against the Scarlet Knights, Cheeseman played nearly 49 minutes in goal for Penn, stopping nine shots and allowing just three goals. Three goals was all the Yale Bulldogs could get past Cheeseman on Saturday as well, as the New York native collected seven saves in Penn’s 15-4 Ivy League victory.
Cheeseman currently ranks first nationally in save percentage (0.649) and second in the country with a 5.95 goals against average.
